Are you against opening a new Finder window? That's how I always do it - select files, open new Finder window, create new folder in the second Finder window, and then drag the still-highlighted files from the first Finder window to the second.

Unfortunately the new Finder window always opens up in the default directory - which you can set...but there's no "last used directory" option or anything.

Have you checked out On My Command? OMC has a plugin called "Copy to..." which can be tied to the right-click menu, and brings up the finder window where you can click "new folder" to create a new folder.

Search for "onmycommand" and you should find it straightaway.
